From the first production truck in 1918 to the latest 2018 Silverado 1500, Chevrolet has been producing some of the most dependable and capable trucks that are also beautifully designed. In honor of Chevy celebrating 100 years of making some of our favorite trucks, we’ve decided to name what we think are the five coolest truck designs in Chevy’s history.
1918 Chevy One-Ton
We may as well start at the beginning. The 1918 Chevy One-Ton was the first ever production truck from Chevy. It may be hard to imagine now, but back then some assembly was required as the open frame meant customers could cater the body to their exact needs.
Twenty years after the One-Ton, Chevy had its first truck designed by the new Art and Color department. Longer and lower than its predecessors while still being attractive with its styled grille and swept fenders, the ’38 Half-Ton was one of the first trucks designed with both practicality and looks in mind.
1955 3124 Series Cameo Carrier
Where the ’38 Half-Ton wanted to deviate from cars, the 1955 3124 Series Cameo Carrier incorporated car features to make the truck unlike any other. In an era where design and styling were more important than ever, the ’55 Cameo Carrier didn’t skimp on style, being Chevy’s first truck to be styled bumper-to-bumper.
1973 C30 One-Ton Dually
Considered to be the first modern heavy-duty pickup, the 1973 C30 One-Ton Dually was also the first Crew Cab dually to market. It became so popular in 70s culture with its unique “square body” design that it seems to show up in every movie set in the decade.
1999 Silverado 1500 LT Z71
The beginning of the Silverado as a stand-alone model, the ’99 Silverado 1500 also showcased some of the design features we most closely associate with Chevy trucks to this day. Twenty years later, the Chevrolet front end has only slightly changed from its birth on this model.
