Chevrolet Volt

The Chevrolet Volt is the first extended range electric vehicle ever made. It changed the way plug-in vehicles were seen. The way the Voltec system worked, it was possible to drive longer driving range than with strictly plug-in vehicles.

THE VOLTEC SYSTEM

An extended range electric vehicle starts with using the battery first to power an electric motor. Once the battery is empty, power is transferred to the generator – a gasoline internal combustion engine. Charging the battery resets the power system back to the electric motor. It worked very well in the current Volt, but it needed more range to compete with newer plug-in hybrids. The battery system is now capable of a 53-mile range on a single charge. This will increase the total system driving range to 420 miles. Based on average usage in the current Volt, this translates into 1,000 miles between actual fuel-ups.

To achieve these results, the new Volt will receive a new two-motor system that is more powerful and lighter than before. The range extending generator is a 1.5-liter engine with an increase in power to add to the electric motor’s increased torque. Battery capacity is now increased, while the entire charging unit is more efficient with fewer cells to fill. There is also a recovery system for the battery called Regen on Demand which gives the driver the ability to control energy regeneration through the braking system by a switch on the back of the steering wheel.

You can charge up your Chevrolet Volt Premier a fraction quicker than the current model. The big change to the Volt Premier is an upgraded charging system – up from 3.6 kW to 7.2 kW. That means a quicker charge time using a Level 2 charger – as little as 2.3 hours to a full charge.

Imagine how life would be if you had just 2.3 hours to charge up your Volt. You can make a late night food run along Interstate 45 and plug it back in for the morning commute down to Milwaukee or in town. You can go to the doctor’s and have more battery available to you to get home.

The new system will get up to 53 miles on a single charge on electricity alone. Once your battery runs out, your generator kicks in, giving you up to 420 miles of gasoline-fueled range.

INTERIOR AND TECHNOLOGY

Though most of us would never see the Voltec system in action, a new interior has all of the facilities to monitor it. A new center display in the instrument panel uses a color meter to show energy flow and status easily. This is also augmented by a new eight-inch screen that houses MyLink and other connected services – including OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi, various OnStar services, and connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Space has also been increased in the new Volt. Seating for up to five includes better leg and head room both up front and in back. Hatchback space is also increased with more flexible utilization than ever. The driver will also have fewer switches and icons to work with, as the goal with the new Volt is to make things simpler to use – including a more intuitive charging system that interfaces with the Remotelink smartphone app.

SAFETY

Safety does not stop with OnStar’s connected services. Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Forward Safety Awareness add to the Volt’s integrated structure in protecting everyone inside. That structure is lighter thanks to the use of advanced high strength steel in its construction. Ten airbags are positioned throughout the Volt for optimal safety protection.

DESIGN

More importantly is the new look of the Volt. It is sleeker and sportier than before. There are still hints of it being a Volt, but one may never know it is one with its tout styling.

Pricing for the Volt starts at $34,395.
