How Do I Check My Car’s Oil?

When you are learning how to check the oil level in cars, the age of your vehicle may change the process a bit. Checking car oil in some newer vehicles is done with electronic oil monitors instead of the traditional dipstick. Check your owner’s manual for recommendations for your model. If your car uses an oil dipstick, follow these steps for how to check the oil level in cars manually:

  1. Park your vehicle on level ground and let the engine cool down.
  2. Pop the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.
  5. Your dipstick will have a way of indicating the proper oil level. If the top of the oil streak is between two marks or within a cross-hatched area, you’re at the proper level. If it is below, you’ll need to add more oil.
  6. If you need an oil change or additional oil, purchase the proper type of oil, remove the oil filler cap, then add oil a little at a time until the dipstick indicates you’ve reached the proper level.

How to Check the Oil Level in a Car

The quality and level of engine oil shouldn’t be overlooked, as it is absolutely essential for your vehicle’s performance. Oil changes are usually recommended at least twice a year, but depending on the make and model and how you drive it, you may need to change your oil more frequently. Checking car oil at least once a month is a good idea to be sure it’s at the proper level. This can also help you feel confident that there are no leaks, and that your vehicle has enough oil to protect the engine components on your travels around Winchester and London. Schedule a service appointment without delay if your oil light comes on or your hood is hot to the touch. Your car could have an oil leak or the engine could be overheating due to low oil levels.
