Generous storage space and a spacious cabin aren’t the only reasons Richmond drivers should consider investing in the 2023 Chevy Tahoe. 2023 Chevy Tahoe Towing Capacity

Many towing capacity numbers are possible on the Chevy Tahoe, but they range between 7,600 and 8,400 pounds. This depends on your engine of choice, two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and whether you have one or both available towing packages. Here’s a breakdown of the towing capacity ranges by the engine:
- The 5.3-liter engine two-wheel-drive Tahoe can draw 7,900 pounds without one of the trailering packages and can pull 8,400 pounds with them.
- The 6.2-liter engine two-wheel-drive Tahoe can draw 7,800 pounds unequipped and 8,300 pounds with a trailering kit.
- The 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine in two-wheel drive can tow up to 8,200 pounds with a trailering package, and numbers vary without it, up to 7,800 pounds on the High Country or 7,900 pounds on lower models.
The max trailering package isn’t available on the Tahoe RST edition, which is understandable given its focus on unburdened track times and high-speed performance. Also, there’s generally a 200-pound reduction in towing capacity if you opt for four-wheel drive. For instance, a four-wheel-drive 5.3-liter Tahoe can draw 7,700 pounds instead of 7,900 and 8,200 pounds instead of 8,400. 2023 Chevy Tahoe Engine Specs
The new Chevrolet Tahoe is available in six trim levels: LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. Depending on the trim you choose, you can access three engine options. All of them are mated with a Hydra-Matic 10L80 10-speed automatic transmission. First is a 5.3-liter V-8 VVT direct injection engine that generates 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Except for the High Country, the 5.3-liter V-8 engine is the standard choice. The payload capacity is quite strong at 1,834 pounds in two-wheel drive and 1,746 pounds in four-wheel drive.
The second engine choice is a 6.2-liter V-8 that develops 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The High Country comes equipped with a 6.2-liter V-8 engine. This powertrain appears as an option on the RST, Z71, and Premier models. The two-wheel-drive payload capacity is 1,671 pounds and the four-wheel-drive payload capacity is 1,616 pounds.
Finally, if you have access to diesel fuel, you’ll love the I-6 DOHC turbo-diesel 3.0-liter Duramax engine, generating 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Duramax engines are available on all trim levels, and the two-wheel-drive payload capacity is 1,717 pounds, while the four-wheel drive gets you 1,625 pounds.
Chevy Tahoe Towing Capacity Factors
The towing capacity of the 2023 Tahoe can vary by up to 400 pounds depending on the engine alone, but other factors are at play. Aside from the engine, drivetrain, and trim level, one key detail is whether or not it has Chevy’s factory-installed trailer towing equipment. Adding one of the two tow kits can increase towing capability by at least 200 pounds, but more often by 500.
One thing is certain, the Chevy Tahoe can tow more than ever with the 2023 model year. Most people only need up to Class III towing at weights of up to 5,000 pounds, so you can be confident you’re getting a practical SUV in any trim level or combination.
How Many Chevy Tahoe Towing Packages Are There?
Even with no towing package, every Tahoe model includes a factory-mounted Class IV tow hitch receiver. Aside from that, two main options are available: the Advanced Trailering package and the Max Towing package that builds off it. The Advanced Trailering bundle includes hitch guidance with Hitch View mode for the backup camera, easily accessed via the Chevy trailering app. You’ll also get an integrated trailer brake controller, high-capacity radiator, and performance cooling fan. Finally, the Advanced Trailering package adds a trailer side blind-zone alert on the Premier and High Country trims.
If you opt for the Max Towing package, you’ll get everything in the Advanced Trailering package, as well as improved radiator cooling technology. Finally, you could say there’s a third towing option because on the LS, LT, or four-wheel-drive RST models with Max Towing, you can also add an active two-speed transfer case, great for uphill tows and rock crawling.
How Do I Know If My 2023 Tahoe Has a Towing Package?
Inspect the underside of your Tahoe’s rear bumper for a trailer hitch receiver or ball mount. This will give you a good idea if your Tahoe already has one of the towing equipment packages. Another option is to verify the paperwork that arrived with your vehicle or contact your Chevy dealer to confirm what features are installed. If you call, try to have your vehicle identification number ready so the associate can look up your vehicle in a few easy clicks.
Tow More With a 2023 Chevy Tahoe
The 2023 Chevy Tahoe exceeds full-size, three-row SUV expectations, offering tons of room, comfort, and practical use. It’s a great option for its versatile cargo area and rear-seat legroom, not to mention one of the best diesel engines in the segment. Some competing vehicles may offer higher maximum tow ratings, but it’s important to keep in mind the prices of the package that earns those outputs and whether you need to go beyond 10,000 pounds.
Thanks to advanced features, such as Hitch Guidance with Hitch View, an integrated trailer brake controller, and trailer sway control, the Tahoe has the convenience to match its strength.
