2024 Chevy Tahoe vs. GMC Yukon: Which is Better?
Two models stand out if you want a large and luxurious family vehicle. The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon offer an upscale interior with three rows of comfortable seating, the latest infotainment and safety technology, a choice of three powerful engines, and stout cargo and towing capacities. But which is better, the Tahoe or the Yukon?
Our team at Jack Burford Chevrolet in Richmond, Kentucky, has put together a Chevrolet Tahoe vs. GMC Yukon comparison to help you make an informed decision.
What Are the Trim Levels?
The Tahoe is available in the LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country trim levels. You can choose from the SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trims with the Yukon. Both have bold front-end styling, distinctive lighting, an elegant profile, and a sporty rear.
Standard exterior features include LED lighting, active aero shutters, rain-sensing wipers, side assist steps, heated power mirrors, and bright roof rails. Acoustic laminated glass helps keep out road and traffic noise for a quiet ride, while deep tinted windows provide privacy for rear-seat passengers. Higher-spec trims have features such as power-retractable side steps and LED perimeter lighting.
Each brand offers a specialized off-road-capable trim with the Tahoe Z71 and Yukon AT4. These variants feature standard four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case, 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, skid plates, front tow hooks, and a unique front fascia for a higher approach angle.
Which Is Bigger?
If you’re shopping for a large SUV, you might wonder, “Is a Yukon bigger than a Tahoe?” In truth, both vehicles share the same interior and exterior dimensions. Depending on the configuration, these SUVs have seating for seven, eight, or nine people, and passengers have plenty of legroom and headroom in all three rows. And with lots of storage space, you don’t need to leave anyone or anything behind on your family adventures.
You get 25.5 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats. Folding down the third row gives you 72.6 cubic feet of storage, while the cargo area increases to 122.9 cubic feet with the second row folded. All but the base trims offer a hands-free power liftgate, making it easy to load and unload your cargo, even when your hands are full. Both vehicles offer a maximum towing capacity of 8,400 pounds when properly equipped.
What Engine Options Are Available?
The Tahoe and Yukon SUVs have a similar engine lineup. The base engine for both vehicles is a 5.3-liter V-8 that delivers 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque via a 10-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive is standard on the Tahoe Z71 and Yukon AT4 and optional for other trims.
Standard on the Tahoe High Country and Yukon Denali and available on some trims is a 6.2-liter V-8 engine that generates 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Also available on certain models is a 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine delivering 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Which Has Better Fuel Economy?
With the standard engine, the Tahoe and Yukon return up to 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg for highway driving. Upgrade to the 6.2-liter V-8, and you’ll get up to 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. The Tahoe offers slightly better fuel economy with the diesel engine, with figures of 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway against the Yukon’s 21 city mpg and 27 highway mpg.
Which Is Cheaper?
The Chevrolet Tahoe represents a better value than the GMC Yukon. The starting MSRP for each trim is as follows:
- Tahoe LS $58,195.
- Tahoe LT $63,695.
- Tahoe RST $66,295.
- Tahoe Z71 $68,295.
- Tahoe Premier $71,595.
- Tahoe High Country $78,895.
The GMC Yukon’s starting MSRPs are as follows:
- Yukon SLE $60,195.
- Yukon SLT $66,895.
- Yukon AT4 $73,500.
- Yukon Denali $77,300.
- Yukon Denali Ultimate $96,695.
As you can see, each Tahoe trim is cheaper than the equivalent Yukon model.
Which Has Better Interior Features?
The spacious, upscale cabins of the Tahoe and Yukon match features. Both models offer standard remote start, power-adjustable front seats, and tri-zone automatic climate control. The infotainment system has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a six-speaker audio system, and satellite radio. Two 120-volt power outlets enable you to power up your toys.
All but the Tahoe LS offer leather upholstery, heated front seats, driver memory functions, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.2-inch infotainment touch screen, a navigation system, a wireless phone charger, and a premium Bose sound system. Depending on the trim, available features for the Tahoe and Yukon include heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 15-inch head-up display.
What Safety Features Do They Offer?
Safety is a priority in a family vehicle, and the Tahoe and Yukon come with a whole host of standard and available driver-assistance technologies. Standard features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, a following distance indicator, front and rear parking sensors, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, and trailer sway control.
Available safety features include rear pedestrian warning, reverse automatic braking, rear cross-traffic warning, lane change alert, and trailer side blind-zone warning. An available HD surround vision camera gives you a 360-degree view of your vehicle. The top two Tahoe trims offer Super Cruise hands-free driving technology, which is only available on the Yukon Denali Ultimate trim.
