Best Bird-Watching Sites Near Richmond, Kentucky

Naturalists have been making their way to Kentucky for decades to admire the breathtaking scenery, so it should be no surprise that there are dozens of amazing birding hotspots in the area. John James Audubon State Park

In nearby Henderson, John James Audubon State Park is a top pick for casual birding. Before heading out, explore the nature center to learn more about the birds you’ll see on the preserve. Then, stroll the Audubon Wetlands boardwalk, or enjoy hiking more than six miles of trails leading to some of the best birding views in Kentucky.

In winter, the park has seven woodpecker species, sparrows, mixed flocks, and waterfowl. Buteos, accipiters, and owls can also be occasionally seen or heard. Spring, summer, and fall bring warblers, bald eagles, great blue and green herons, and belted kingfishers. The park’s bluebird nest boxes provide photo opportunities for eastern bluebirds, Carolina chickadees and wrens, and even tree swallows.

Looking to extend your stay? The 69-site campground is open from mid-March through mid-November and has restrooms with showers, picnic tables, grills, and a playground. Want to upgrade your lodging? The state park is home to five one-bedroom cottages. Each has a king-sized bed, pull-out sofa, fireplace in the living room, one bathroom, and a full kitchen. There is also a two-bedroom cottage with four queen-sized beds, two bathrooms, and a full living room and kitchen.

Sloughs Wildlife Management Area

Sloughs Wildlife Management Area was nominated in 2006 as Kentucky’s first Important Bird Area. Consisting of over 10,000 acres of wetland along the Ohio River, it was converted from agricultural use and returned to its original condition to create a vast area of wetlands for waterfowl. In winter, it’s home to over 20,000 ducks and 15,000 geese. It’s also home to one of the most prolific bald eagle nests on this side of the Mississippi.

The Sloughs are home to approximately 250 species of ducks, geese, wading birds, and shorebirds. If planning a winter visit, you may even catch a glimpse of the greater white-fronted goose or the tundra swan. With wildlife viewing platforms all along Highway 68, you can check out these species from all angles. There’s even an observation tower at Anderson Pond to ensure you can take in the bird’s-eye view.

Falls of the Ohio State Park

Falls of the Ohio State Park is the perfect spot to bird-watch in the summer and fall months. Shorebirds such as the semipalmated plover, American golden plover, ruddy turnstone, sandpipers, and sanderlings are easy to spot in the dry summer months. Visiting during late summer and early fall will bring you the best views of great blue herons, black vultures, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, double-crested cormorants, and even osprey.

If you can visit between June and November, you can also expect a spectacular show of fossils from the Devonian Age thanks to an exposed rocky river bottom. Tours are available daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Each tour lasts around two hours, and you can choose the program that works best for you. Whether you’re looking for a tour focused on United States history or Native peoples, or you’d rather stick to bird-watching, there’s something for you. Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area

Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is one of the largest sections of undeveloped land in Kentucky, which has helped to maintain a habitat perfect for a variety of birds and waterfowl for visitors to watch. As its name suggests, the large lakes provide a desirable habitat for gulls and waterfowl, while bald eagles and osprey nest nearby. In the spring and fall, the American white pelican makes an appearance, and if you’re looking to visit in late winter, you may spot flocks of sandhill cranes on their migration path.

Dozens of different songbird species have found their ideal habitat between the lakes in the surrounding forests and grasslands. As a result, spending your day bird-watching in this area is as much a treat for the ears as it is for the eyes.

Red River Gorge Geological Area

The scenic views found at Red River Gorge Geological Area are not only spectacular for visitors but are also the ideal habitat for dozens of bird species. Visitors can marvel at incredible rock features, such as towering cliffs and sandstone arches, a variety of trees, and changing colors in the fall. No matter what time of year you plan your visit, you’re sure to find spectacular views of the scenery and wildlife.

Nesting birds make their home in the surrounding hardwood forests, so you won’t have to look far to find any number of species roosting in the trees. The Rock Bridge area is home to many species, including wild turkeys, the pileated woodpecker, wood thrush, scarlet tanager, and a variety of warblers. You might even catch a glimpse of the ruffed grouse, red-shouldered or broad-winged hawks, a blue-headed vireo, or a red-breasted nuthatch.

Luckily, Red River Gorge Geological Area charges no fee for trail use. However, they do require a camping pass if you plan to spend the night, which cost $5 for the day, $7 for three days, or $50 for an annual pass.
